Open API UK data update
September 21st, 2007
At Multimap we’re very proud of the wide range of local and global mapping data available on our website and through our API, and are committed to providing as much of this data via the Open API as we can. To that end, we’re very pleased to announce the availability of Ordnance Survey Landranger maps (at 1:50000 scale across zoom levels 13, 14 and 15) through the Open API.
The Landranger data covers England, Scotland and Wales and provides a wealth of topographic features, such as contour lines, tourist attractions and historic features such as Roman roads. These maps are great for walkers, cyclists, or for providing detailed maps of rural areas. We can’t wait to see how people make use of them through the Open API.
Here’s an example plotting a hill-walk a group of Multimappers and friends took, tracked on the multitude of GPS devices that a party of map geeks always travel with!
The Open API provides a user interface control to enable switching of map styles, the Map Type widget, documentation on which can be found in the Map Widget example topic. You can also switch map styles programmatically; more information on this can be found in the Map Data Preferences example topic.

As part of this Open API data update we have also upgraded the UK postcode geocoding dataset, providing far greater coverage and accuracy. Both Ordnance Survey Landranger maps and the improved postcode geocoding are enabled immediately for existing and new Open API keys.
Have fun mashing-up the new data!
